1. Make the sound
- Choose an audio file and pick a short, clear moment: 1 to 3 seconds works best.
- Keep Even volume on so it's as loud as other alerts.
- Name it (for example “WhatsApp Mum”) and tap Download.
2. Set it in WhatsApp (Android)
- Open WhatsApp → ⋮ → Settings → Notifications.
- Under Messages (or Groups), tap Notification tone.
- Pick your file. Depending on your Android version, WhatsApp shows the sound list directly or opens Android's notification settings for WhatsApp, where you tap Sound.
- If your file isn't listed, add it once via Settings → Sound & vibration → Default notification sound → +, then go back to WhatsApp.
A different sound for one chat
Open the chat, tap the contact or group name at the top, then Notifications (or Custom notifications) and choose a tone. Now you'll know who's writing without picking up your phone.
What about iPhone?
At the time of writing, WhatsApp on iPhone only offers its own built-in tones, so custom files can't be used there. You can still use your sound as an iPhone text tone or ringtone.

Questions
Does WhatsApp have to be open?
No. Once set, the sound plays for new messages like any other notification.
The custom sound stopped working after an update
App updates can reset notification settings. Repeat step 2 and pick your file again: it's still in your Downloads folder.
