How to set a custom ringtone on OnePlus

OnePlus phones (OxygenOS) let you choose any file on your phone as a ringtone from the Sound & vibration settings. The same steps work on the Nord series.

Set it on your OnePlus, OPPO or realme

  1. Open Settings → Sound & vibration
  2. Tap Ringtone
  3. Tap Choose local ringtone
  4. Pick your file from Downloads

Menu names can differ a little between phones and software versions.

Make your ringtone first

Before you start: make the ringtone

You need the ringtone as an audio file on your phone. Open the Android ringtone maker, pick a song or recording, trim it and tap Download. The MP3 lands in your Downloads folder, ready for the steps below.

Tips for OnePlus

  • On recent OxygenOS versions the option may be called Choose local ringtone or Local ringtone, at the top or bottom of the list.
  • If you have two SIMs, OnePlus shows a ringtone for each: set both.
  • Turn off Vibrate for calls if you only want the sound.

Check the Alert Slider first

Most OnePlus phones have an Alert Slider on the side with three positions: ring, vibrate and silent. If your new ringtone never plays, the slider is the usual reason. Push it to the top (ring) and try again. Some newer models replace the slider with a customisable key; in that case check the sound mode in Quick Settings.

Two SIMs, two ringtones

OnePlus phones keep a separate ringtone for each SIM, and the ringtone screen asks which one you're changing. That's handy if you have a work number and a personal number: give each its own tone and you'll know which one is ringing before you pick up. Make two clips in FoneVibe, name them clearly (for example “Work” and “Personal”) and set one per SIM.

Notification sounds and alarms on OnePlus

Notifications: Settings → Sound & vibration → Notification sound (or Notifications), then Choose local and pick your file. Use a 1 to 3 second clip from the notification sound maker.

Alarm: open Clock, tap the alarm, tap Ringtone and choose a local file. The alarm tone maker adds a slow fade-in.

Why it looks like OPPO: recent OxygenOS shares its base with OPPO's ColorOS, so the menus look the same. The OPPO and realme guide works too.

Ringtone not showing in the list?

  • Open the Files app → Downloads and check the file is there. Some browsers save to a folder called Download.
  • If the browser played the file instead of saving it, long-press the download and choose Download.
  • Close the ringtone list and open it again. Restarting the phone also makes it show up.
  • Rename the ringtone without emoji or special characters and download it again.
  • Still missing? Use your Files app's Move option to put the file in the Ringtones folder of your phone's internal storage. Android lists everything in that folder as a ringtone. For notification sounds, use the Notifications folder.

Questions

My file isn't in the local ringtone list

Check it's in Files → Downloads, then reopen the list. Restarting the phone makes Android rescan your sounds.

The ringtone plays on vibrate only

Check the Alert Slider (or sound mode in Quick Settings) is set to ring, and that ring volume isn't at zero.

Does this work on OnePlus Nord?

Yes. Nord phones run the same OxygenOS, so the steps match.

Can I set a ringtone for one contact on OnePlus?

Yes: open Contacts, tap the person, and look for Ringtone (sometimes under Edit). See contact ringtones.
