How to set a custom ringtone on iPhone
Since iOS 26 you can set a ringtone right from the Files app: no computer, no GarageBand. Here's how, step by step, plus how to use it for one contact, texts and alarms, and what to do if it doesn't show up.
Set it on your iPhone (iOS 26 or later)
- Open the Files app and go to Downloads
- Touch and hold your ringtone, then tap Share
- Tap Use as Ringtone
- Check it's ticked in Settings → Sounds & Haptics → Ringtone
Don't see “Use as Ringtone”? Your iPhone may be on an older iOS. Use the GarageBand steps instead.
Menu names can differ a little between phones and software versions.
Make your ringtone firstBefore you start
- Check your version in Settings → General → About. These steps need iOS 26 or later. On older versions, follow the GarageBand guide.
- Make the ringtone with the iPhone ringtone maker. It must be under 30 seconds: FoneVibe stops at 29.
- Safari saves downloads to Files → Downloads (On My iPhone or iCloud Drive, depending on your settings). Chrome and other browsers ask where to save: pick Downloads so you can find it again.
Why the file has to be M4A, not MP3
iPhone ringtones use AAC audio, saved as .m4a or .m4r. The iPhone won't offer an MP3 as a ringtone, even if it plays fine in the Files app. FoneVibe's iPhone option converts whatever you upload (MP3, WAV, a voice memo or the sound from a video) to AAC in your browser, so the file is ready to use as soon as it downloads.
The length matters too. A ringtone of 30 seconds or more is refused, which is why the iPhone export stops at 29 seconds. If you add ringtones from a Mac or PC instead, the M4R export allows up to 40 seconds.
Use it for one contact, texts or alarms
- One contact: open Contacts → the person → Edit → Ringtone, and pick your new tone. Turn on Emergency Bypass on the same screen if you want that person's calls to ring even in Silent mode or a Focus.
- Text tone: Settings → Sounds & Haptics → Text Tone. Custom tones are usually listed there too. For texts, a clip of 1 to 3 seconds works best: make one with the notification sound maker.
- Alarm: Clock → Alarms → tap an alarm → Sound. Your custom tones appear under Ringtones.
How to pick a clip that works as a ringtone
- Start on the hook. People hear the first two or three seconds most. Begin on the chorus or the most recognisable line, not a slow intro.
- Keep it short. Most calls ring for 20 to 30 seconds before going to voicemail, so a 20 to 30 second clip is plenty. Longer clips simply never get heard.
- Make it loop cleanly. A ringtone repeats until you answer. Fade out stops the jump back to the start from sounding like a glitch.
- Match the volume. Songs are often quieter than the phone's built-in tones. Even volume levels it out, and Louder helps if you miss calls in noisy places.
- Choose something you won't tire of. You'll hear it many times a day. Test it on the phone speaker before you commit: it sounds different from headphones.
Ringtone set but the phone doesn't ring?
- Check Silent mode. On older iPhones it's the switch on the side; on newer models it's set with the Action button or in Control Centre.
- Check Focus (Do Not Disturb, Sleep and so on) in Control Centre. Focus silences calls from people who aren't on its allowed list.
- Turn up Ringtone and Alerts in Settings → Sounds & Haptics. This is separate from the media volume buttons while music plays.
Ringtone not showing up?
- Ringtones must be under 30 seconds. FoneVibe caps iPhone exports at 29 s for you.
- Check the file is in Files → Downloads (Safari: tap the download arrow in the address bar).
- No “Use as Ringtone” in the Share menu? Use the GarageBand steps or the computer method.
Questions
How do I delete a custom ringtone?
Open Settings → Sounds & Haptics → Ringtone, swipe left on the custom tone and tap Delete.
Can I use an MP3?
Not directly. iPhone ringtones must be AAC (M4A/M4R). The iPhone ringtone maker converts MP3 and other files for you.
Where do custom ringtones appear in the list?
At the top of Settings → Sounds & Haptics → Ringtone, above Apple's built-in tones.
Can I make a ringtone from a video or voice memo?
Yes. Choose the video or the voice memo in FoneVibe and it uses just the sound. Voice memos need saving to Files first: open the memo, tap ⋯ → Save to Files.
Do I need iTunes or a computer?
No, not on iOS 26 or later. Everything happens on the iPhone. A computer is only needed if you prefer the Finder or iTunes route.
Is my song uploaded anywhere?
No. FoneVibe trims and converts the audio inside your browser. The file never leaves your phone.
