How to set a custom ringtone on Google Pixel
Pixel phones keep your own sounds under **My Sounds**. Add your file once and it stays there for ringtones and notifications. The same steps work on most phones close to stock Android, such as Motorola and Nokia.
Set it on your Pixel
- Open Settings → Sound & vibration
- Tap Phone ringtone → My Sounds
- Tap + and pick your file from Downloads
- Make sure it's selected, then go back to save
Menu names can differ a little between phones and software versions.
Make your ringtone firstBefore you start: make the ringtone
You need the ringtone as an audio file on your phone. Open the Android ringtone maker, pick a song or recording, trim it and tap Download. The MP3 lands in your Downloads folder, ready for the steps below.
Tips for Google Pixel
- Sounds you add appear under My Sounds for both the ringtone and the default notification sound.
- Motorola, Nokia and other phones close to stock Android use the same steps.
- If Phone ringtone shows two SIMs, set each one separately.
- Chrome saves to Files → Downloads. If the + button opens a different app, tap the ☰ menu in the picker and choose Downloads.
- Want the ringtone to start quietly and build up? Turn on Fade in in FoneVibe before you download, so it doesn't blast out at full volume in a quiet room.
Notification sounds and alarms on Pixel
Notifications: Settings → Sound & vibration → Default notification sound → My Sounds → +. Short, distinct sounds work best: make one with the notification sound maker.
One app only: long-press a notification from that app, tap the settings icon, open the notification category and change its Sound.
Alarm: open Clock, tap the alarm's bell icon (or its sound name), then Your sounds → + Add new and pick your file. A slow fade-in from the alarm tone maker makes mornings gentler.
Why your Pixel isn't ringing
- Flip to Shhh: if it's on, laying the phone face down turns on Do Not Disturb. Turn the phone over, or switch the feature off.
- Do Not Disturb or a Mode (Bedtime, Driving) may be on. Check Quick Settings.
- Ring volume: press a volume button, tap the ⋯ icon and raise Ring & notification volume.
Ringtone not showing in the list?
- Open the Files app → Downloads and check the file is there. Some browsers save to a folder called Download.
- If the browser played the file instead of saving it, long-press the download and choose Download.
- Close the ringtone list and open it again. Restarting the phone also makes it show up.
- Rename the ringtone without emoji or special characters and download it again.
- Still missing? Use your Files app's Move option to put the file in the Ringtones folder of your phone's internal storage. Android lists everything in that folder as a ringtone. For notification sounds, use the Notifications folder.
Questions
I can't find My Sounds
Open Phone ringtone and scroll to the top: My Sounds is the first group. Tap it, then the + button.
How do I remove a sound from My Sounds?
Delete or move the file in the Files app. It disappears from My Sounds, and the phone switches back to a built-in tone if it was in use.
Does this work on Motorola?
Yes. Motorola uses near-stock Android, so the menus match. Some models call the option Ringtone instead of Phone ringtone.
Can I set a ringtone for one contact on Pixel?
Yes: Contacts → the person → ⋮ → Set ringtone. See contact ringtones.
