How to make an iPhone ringtone
- Pick your audio. Tap Choose audio and select a song, voice memo or video from Files or Photos.
- Trim it. We start the selection on the loudest part. Drag the handles or tap a length. iPhone ringtones stop at 29 seconds.
- Download. Make sure the iPhone tab is selected, give your ringtone a name and tap Download. The file is saved to Files → Downloads.
- Set it. On iOS 26 or later, share the file from the Files app and choose Use as Ringtone. On older versions, use GarageBand. We show the steps right after you download.
Why iPhone ringtones are limited to 29 seconds
iPhone won't accept a ringtone of 30 seconds or longer: it either refuses to import it or trims it. FoneVibe stops iPhone exports at 29 seconds so your ringtone always works. Most calls go to voicemail within about 20 to 30 seconds anyway, so a short, punchy clip that starts on the hook works best.
If you copy ringtones from a Mac or PC with Finder or iTunes, the M4R export allows up to 40 seconds.
Which iOS version do you have?
Open Settings → General → About and look at iOS Version.
iOS 26 or later: you can set a ringtone from the Files app. Follow our iPhone ringtone guide.
iOS 18 or earlier: use Apple's free GarageBand app to add the ringtone. Our GarageBand guide walks you through it.
Tips for a great iPhone ringtone
- Start on the chorus or the most recognisable moment, not the intro.
- Keep Fade in on so the ringtone doesn't start with a click, and Fade out so it loops smoothly.
- Turn on Even volume so quiet songs ring as loud as the built-in tones. Use Louder if you often miss calls in noisy places.
- Give it a short, clear name. That's what you'll see in Settings → Sounds & Haptics.
Questions
Can I use a song from Apple Music or Spotify?
No. Streaming songs are protected and can't be opened as files. Use music you own as a file, like songs bought from the iTunes Store, your own recordings, or tracks you have permission to use.
Do I need a computer or iTunes?
Not on iOS 26 or later: everything happens on your iPhone. On older iOS versions, GarageBand (free, on your iPhone) does the job. A computer is only needed if you prefer syncing an M4R with Finder or iTunes.
Does it work in Safari and Chrome on iPhone?
Yes. FoneVibe runs in any modern iPhone browser. The file is processed on your iPhone and never uploaded.
Why M4A and not MP3?
iPhone ringtones must be AAC audio, the format inside M4A and M4R files. MP3 files can't be used as iPhone ringtones, so we convert for you.
